MacBurnie, A. Gerald, July 9, 1918 – February 16, 2017; age 98, of Poplar Grove, Hants County, passed away peacefully at the Windsor Elms Village, Falmouth where he had resided since mid-2015. He was predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Beulah (Benedict) in 2013. Gerald was born in Millers Creek, and was the son of the late Bertram and Alderada (Margison) MacBurnie. He was also predeceased by five brothers, Raymond, Wilfred, Clyde, Clayton and Douglas; three sisters, Florence, Daisy and Idella. He is survived by his daughter, Sharon MacBurnie, Falmouth; son, Arnold (Kathy) MacBurnie and two grandsons, Christopher (Megh); Jonathan, all of Alberta; sister-in-law, Effie Spencer, Blomindon. He will be greatly missed. Gerald was raised in Poplar Grove, attended high school in Windsor and worked on various farms in Windsor and Belmont area, prior to moving to Eastern Passage during the Second World War. He and Beulah returned to Poplar Grove in 1944 and lived there until her death and subsequently his move to the nursing home. Gerald spent the majority of his working life as a painting contractor and foreman on industrial, commercial and residential projects in the Halifax metro area, as well as in other Nova Scotia locations. A life-long member of the Poplar Grove and Avondale United Church’s, he served as an Elder for over fifty years and continued in fund raising and church maintenance projects throughout his long retirement. Although a quiet man, he made many friends and acquaintances through his long life and always had a good word and friendly approach to all he met. Special thanks to all the staff at the Windsor Elms Village, especially those in the Meadowview unit, as they became his extended family for his last years. Visitation was 2-4 p.m. Sunday, February 19, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home (902-798-2232), 194 King St., P.O. Box 2218, Windsor, B0N 2T0, where funeral service was 2 p.m. Monday, February 20, 2017, in the Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Kevin Cox officiating, followed by a reception in Lindsay Funeral Home. Interment was in the Riverview Haven Cemetery, Union Corner. In lieu of flowers, donations were requested be made in his memory, to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, Riverview Haven Cemetery Fund, or a charity of your choice.
