She died of natural causes. She was married to the late Wilmer (Bill) A. Smith for 66 years before his passing in 2014. Born January 21, 1925 in Weston, MA, she was the daughter of the late James and Blanche Schofield. She was the youngest of five, enjoying four older brothers, Llewellyn, Winford, Brenton, and Jay, all born in Nova Scotia before her parents moved to Weston in the early 1920’s. She was a graduate of Weston High School in 1942. Ruth worked for Fitts Insurance and then Schofield Brothers Inc. through the 1940’s. She later returned to work for Sears and Schofield in Holliston. Ruth enjoyed baking and crafts, including crochet, needlepoint, quilting, and knitting. She also donated her time working for charities, including the Royal Family Kids Camp, Habitat for Humanity, and North Carolina United Methodist Disaster Recovery missions. Ruth met her beloved husband while working at Schofield Brothers, and together they adopted and raised three children. In 1968, the Smiths were a host family through the Fresh Air Fund, a non-profit agency sending urban youth to suburban homes across New England, when they first met eight-year-old Audrey, who became a member of the family. Ruth is survived by two daughters, Audrey Aduama of West Roxbury, MA, and Pamela Noda and her husband Makito of Tokyo, Japan, and two sons, Kenton Smith and his wife Caroline Markey of Sydney, Australia, and Timothy Smith and his wife Janesa of Martinsburg, WV; seven grandchildren, Nicolette and Jacob Aduama, Kajito Noda, Mahoko Shimizu and her husband Ryuji, Derick and Trevor Smith, and Matilda Smith; two great-grandchildren, Khalil and Nisaelle Waldron; and many special nieces and nephews. Ruth was lovingly cared for by her son Timothy and his wife Janesa during the last few years. She was visited often by nieces, Cindy Carleton, of Annapolis, MD; Gail McKeown of Holliston, MA and husband Richard; and nephew Jay Schofield of Vineyard Haven, MA and his wife Pat. She also enjoyed visits from many other friends and family. The celebration of life service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Framingham at a future date.
