Ethel Marchant

Lieu de naissance : Belle Isle East, Nouvelle Ecosse, Canada

Lieu de décès : Truro, Nouvelle Ecosse, Canada

Ethel Marchant, of Truro, passed away at The Mira, on April 8, 2017, with family by her side. Born at home, in Belle Isle East, Annapolis Co., to Clarence and Florence (Irvine) Longley, she grew up in the valley, where she met her husband, Ken, to whom she was married for close to sixty remarkable years. Ethel spent her life giving to others through her teaching career, her church, and the wider community. Without fail, she put other people first. Fresh out of high school, she began teaching in a one room schoolhouse, on the Bay of Fundy shore, where some of her students were older than she was. Following that, Ethel attended the Provincial Normal College. After completing a three-summer Physical Education program at Dalhousie University, she had positions in Kentville, Montreal, River Hebert, Fredericton, and the former Nova Scotia Teacher’s College. As a member of Brunswick Street United Church, Ethel took many leadership roles with youth groups, UCW and as an Elder. Ethel treasured her many friends and her family, and was especially proud of her five grandchildren. She attended many concerts and sports activities during their school years. She loved to entertain; lucky were those who had a place at her table. As one of her dear friends put it,” Best restaurant in Truro!” Cakes were her specialty! Whether it was Bridge with the ladies, or a good game of Forty-fives at Brule Shore, a glass of wine, in good company, meant happy times and good memories. Ethel is survived by her husband, Ken, daughter, Kim (Dale) Watson and their children, Nicola, Lincoln, Lucas and Declan, son, Steven, sister, Claire (Fiske). She was predeceased by her parents, infant son, Jeffery, and granddaughter, Samantha. The family would like to thank staff at The Mira for their care and kindness toward Ethel during her stay. Visitation at Mattatall- Varner Funeral Home, Wednesday, April 12, 6:30-8pm. Memorial service 2pm Thursday, April 13, Brunswick Street United Church, reception to follow. In memory of Ethel, donations may be made to The Alzheimer Society of Canada, Brunswick St. United Church, or Canadian Cancer Society’s “THE BIG RIDE 2017”, under participant, grandson, Declan Watson.
