Dr. Rudolph Lewis (Rudy) Ozere

Passed away peacefully at home on April 18, 2017 at the age of 91. Son of Samuel and Nettie (Lewis) Ozere. Husband of Paulette (Gosselin); father of Tom (Jocelyn) and Chris (Lynda). Proud grandfather of Amanda, Samantha, April and Joseph. Born in Winnipeg Manitoba, Rudy grew up in Montreal and received his B.Sc. from McGill in 1947, and graduated from the University of Ottawa in medicine in 1953. Rudy obtained his F.R.C.P.C. in Paediatrics in 1957. Rudy began his long and distinguished medical career in 1959 when he moved to Nova Scotia to become a Research Fellow at Dalhousie University. He was a Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at Dalhousie from 1961-81, and he did pioneering research on the oral polio vaccine in the early 60s. He received his Masters of Science from the Harvard School of Public Health in 1967, and from 1971-81 he was the Associate Physician in Chief at the IWK Hospital for Children. From 1981 until his retirement in 1990 Rudy was Chairman of the Department of Paediatrics at Memorial University of Newfoundland and the Physician in Chief of the Department of Paediatrics of the Janeway Child Health Centre in St. John's. He was a Clinical Fellow in the Paediatrics AIDS Program at Duke University from 1988-89. After his retirement Rudy enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, at his beloved cottage in PEI. In keeping with Rudy's final wishes there will be no funeral service.
