Date de naissance : 29 juin 1916

One hundred years is a long time, but, then again, not long enough as we mourn the passing of our dad, granddad, great-granddad, father-in-law and uncle, Daniel Joseph MacLellan. Born on June 29, 1916, dad was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his parents, John J. and Margaret (MacDonald) MacLellan; his wife of fifty-five years, Joan; brothers, John, Michael, Alexander and three sisters, Annie Catherine, Mary Margaret (Sr. John of the Cross), Margaret Florence (Sr. Carmelina) and Lexie, a special cousin raised as his sister. He is survived by his devoted children, daughters, Hazel (Francis) Doucet, Jo (Richard) Chiasson, Willena (Dave) Blackwood, Carol (Tony) Stevens and one son, Ray. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Louise and Matthew Doucet, Dian and Jenna (Martell) Chiasson, Phillp Blackwood, Alexander and Scott Stevens, along with eight great-grandchildren Ewan, Natalie, Savannah, Evan, Andrew, Lucas, Brielle and Jordan.
Dad was a carpenter by trade, a former member of the early Carpenters Union in New Waterford and worked as a construction foreman throughout industrial Cape Breton and Port Hawkesbury. He was particularly proud of his work on the provincial buildings in Sydney and the Water Treatment Plant in Port Hawkesbury. Dad has an appreciation for all things related to wood and although an accident at work forced him into early retirement, he never stopped working with wood. He took great pride in the tools of his trade and could often be found sharpening his saws, not only for himself but for many others. Our dad proudly served his country in the Second World War and it was during his deployment in England that he met our mom Joan, who after the war immigrated to Canada and became his wife. Dad was a family man and particularly enjoyed our family gatherings on his birthday in June when we would celebrate with our annual lobster boil. He was always generous with his time and ready to lend a helping hand to his neighbors, family and friends. Dad enjoyed hunting, fishing and harness racing. Once retired, he spent many hours tilling to soil in preparation for his gardens. He was an avid reader and instilled in us the love of a good book. He especially enjoyed biographies and historical novels. Dad was a life-long member of the Parish of Saint Leonard (formerly Mount Carmel Parish) and served on the Finance Committee of Mount Carmel Parish for many years.
Just ten shorts months ago, we celebrated dad’s 100th birthday with an open house at Carmel Centre. Dad was over-whelmed with all the family and friends from near and far who took the time out of their busy schedules to stop by and share in his special day. It was a fitting tribute to a fine man and very much appreciated. We would like to thank the employees of the Department of Veteran Affairs, New Waterford Home Care, New Dawn and Palliative Care, who spent time with dad and treated him with such dignity and respect. Also, we extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Bridgitte Lowry for her care and concern.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 902-862-7500.
Visitation will take place on Sunday, May 7, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A funeral mass celebrating dad’s life will take place on Monday, May 8, 2017 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of Saint Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating with burial following in Mount Carmel Cemetery. A reception will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall immediately following mass. Donations in dad’s memory may be made to the Parish of Saint Leonard Memorial Fund or the Nora Huntley Home for the Disabled. Online condolence may be forwarded to the family at:
"Fois dha d'anam athair." Rest in Peace, Dad
