ANDERSON, JAMES ERNEST BRIGADIER-GENERAL (Retd), DSO,CM,CD,LLD The death of BrigadierGeneral (Retd) J. Ernest Anderson of Fredericton, NB, occurred at the Veteran's Hospital on Saturday, June 1, 2002. Born in Burnt Church, NB, on August 24, 1911. He was the son of the late W. Stafford and Huldah (Morrison) Anderson and the husband of Eve (Clews) Eagar-Anderson. Educated in Harkins High School, Newcastle and the University of New Brunswick from which he obtained his degree in 1932. In 1940 he enlisted with the North Shore (NB) Regiment serving with distinction as one of its' Company Commanders on D-Day and later as its' Lieutenant Colonel in Northwest Europe. His leadership here led to his promotion to the rank of Brigadier in Command Headquarters of the 14th Infantry Brigade. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order during Operations at Bologne, France. In the past, Ernest has served as President of the Canadian Infantry Association; Army Cadet League of Canada; (NB Div); Navy Cadet League of Canada (NB Div) and Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4; he is a past Honourary Colonel of the North Shore Regiment. Following the Second War, Ernest began a career of public service to his native province retiring in 1974 as Deputy Minister of Youth. He was elected to Fredericton City Council and became Deputy Mayor. Organizations such as Canadian Red Cross, the Interprovincial School for the Deaf, the Provincial Artisans, York Manor, VON: the Salvation Army and Heritage Trust, among others have all benefitted from his advice, skill and devotion. He received an Honourary degree from UNB Saint John in 1976; the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce recognized him as a Distinguished Citizen in 1989 and he was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 1994. Ernest was a member of St. Paul's United Church, the Fredericton Society of St. Andrew; Fredericton Chapter #2 R.A.M.; Northumberland Lodge R.A.M. and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4. Survived by his wife, Eve and his two sons, James Ernest (Ingrid) of Riverview, NB and W.S. Kim of Fredericton, NB, three grandchildren, Stacey Anderson and her husband Derek Weldon of Moncton, NB, Lisa Anderson of Moncton, NB and James Anderson of Riverview, NB; his wife's children, James (Carol) Eagar of Sydney, NS and Peter (Sonia) Eager, of Kentville, NS, Suzanne (Lloyd) Hiscock and Elizabeth (Rene) Alain both of Ottawa, ON; and her 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; one brother J. Burns Anderson of Toronto, ON and three sisters, the Honorable Margaret J. Anderson of Miramichi, NB, H. Shirley Alexander (Don) of Wellington, ON and Mary F. Sage (Robert) of Toronto, ON. He was predeceased by his parents; his first wife, Marion H. (Corbett) Anderson and two brothers, W. Royce Anderson and S. Keith Anderson both of Miramichi, NB. Visitation will take place at McAdam's Select Community Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 4, 2002 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4 will hold a tribute service at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home, followed by the Masonic Lodge #2. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's United Church on Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at 2 p.m. with Rev David Fisher officiating.
