Angus Alexander Gillis

85, New Waterford Angus Alexander Gillis, 85, of Heelen Street, New Waterford, passed away peacefully after a brief illness surrounded by family on Aug. 28, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Inverness, he was a son of the late James ‘Curly Jim’ and Catherine (MacPhee) Gillis. Angus was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Agnes Church, New Waterford. He was a retired miner of 44 years. Angus worked as a mechanic in Nos. 12, 16, and Lingan collieries. He was the go to person whenever you needed help with your car and was always up for the challenge. Angus was a devoted family man who loved to tinker with engines, go for long drives, listen to fiddle music and hang out with family and friends. He had a passion for Fords and was a diehard Toronto Maple Leafs fan. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, the former Sophie Ropek; sons, Wayne (Mary) Gillis, New Waterford, Bobby (Susie) Gillis, Kitchener, Ont.; daughters, Cathy (Fabe) Sudworth, Sherry (Wayne) McKenzie, Rose (Brian) McPherson, all of New Waterford, Angela (Frank) MacKinnon, New Victoria; one brother, John, New Waterford; 11 grandchildren, Michael, David, Colin, Carollee, Tony, Timmy, Scott, Adam, Cory, Meaghan and Matthew; great-grandchildren, Kate, Ashley, Charles, Emma, Ericia, Emily, Alex and Jessica; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Angus was predeceased by three grandchildren, Jillian, Robert and Andrea. A private family visitation will be held Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration for Angus will follow at 11 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Agnes Church with Fr. Paul MacNeil officiating. Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at St. Agnes parish hall. All are welcome. Donations in his memory may be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul or a charity of one’s choice.
