CHARLES SANFORD PROFESSOR MITCHELL

PROFESSOR MITCHELL, CHARLES SANFORD, M. ED. - Of Fredericton, NB passed quietly into the arms of God on January 1, 2008 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Born June 29, 1936 in Saint John, NB to Gladys E. (Clayton) and Cecil W. Mitchell and older brother to Kathleen (Gerald Parlee) of Ottawa. Charles was a graduate of Simonds High School. He pursued a career as a patternmaker with McAvities with his father. The iron fence around Officer's Square in Fredericton, remains a proud accomplishment of the father/son team. He then took up the calling of education, mastering most of his level 5 teacher's certification while working full time with McAvities. His first teaching assignment was as shop teacher at Sackville High School from 1961 to 1968. In 1968, Charles tackled post graduate studies at the State University of New York Oswego. Upon graduation in 1970, Charles accepted a position with Moncton Tech as Instructor - Vocational Education. In 1973, Professor Mitchell moved to Fredericton with the University of New Brunswick in Vocational Education - Industrial Arts Division where he retired in 1996. While at UNB, he held various positions including Division Chair and Assistant Co-ordinator of the Kenyan Technical Teacher's College. Throughout his life, Charles supported his community. As a young man he was a leading member of his Church, Church youth group, air cadets and was a hockey coach. Later, he became a member of the Masonic Lodge, was a supporter of Aitken Centre sport events and was active in the Boy Scouts movement as a troop leader and on the Provincial Board. Professor Mitchell is pre-deceased by his parents and first wife Sarah Mary T. (Pickett) Mitchell. He is survived by his wife, Yolande (LeBlanc) of Fredericton, daughter, Charlotte E. Mitchell of Fredericton, step-daughter, Jill Mitton of Fredericton, sons, Charles Chris C. Mitchell of Fredericton, Claude A. Mitchell of Malton, Ont., Clayton W. Mitchell (Laura Garland) of Rothesay, step-sons, Craig W. Mitton (Paula Woodworth) of Moncton, Aaron N. Mitton of Fredericton, granddaughters, Amelia J. Mitchell, Crystal Q. Mitchell, grandsons, Charles C. Corey Mitchell and C. Colin E. Mitchell and precious step-granddaughter, Julia Mitton and great granddaughter, Julia Mitchell. Special appreciation is extended to Dr. Calvin Bruce, Dr. Pat Thorpe and Dr. Stephen Smith, Wandlyn Richards (Respiratory) Extra-Mural and Nurse Lisa and the many other dedicated professional associated with DECH. Visitation will take place at McAdams Select Community Funeral Home, 160 York Street, Fredericton, NB, on Friday, January 4th, 2008 from 7 pm to 9 pm. A memorial service will take place at the J.A. McAdam Memorial Chapel on Saturday, January 5th, 2008 at 2 PM with Rev. Steven Brown officiating. A reception will take place in the adjoining room immediately following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest remembrances be made to the DECH Foundation or a University of choice. www.mcadamsfh.com
