It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Alex Henry Cole. Alex passed away suddenly Saturday, March 13, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late David and Bertha (Guy) Cole. Alex was a member of Immaculate Conception parish, Sydney Mines.
At the age of 19 years on May 1, 1941, Alex joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the 6th Royal Hussars and Lord Strathcona Horse, and was discharged Dec. 4, 1945. He completed basic training in New Glasgow, N.S., and more training later at Camp Borden, Ont. He was assigned to England in 1941, Italy in 1943, and Holland in 1945. He was involved in the Italian as well as the European Campaign. Seeing action on the Ortona Front, The Hitler Line In Casino, North To The Gothic Line and To The Po Valley. He was assigned to the Calgary Regiment where he first worked as a tank driver and later a tank gunner. Alex said that his memorable moments were spending time with fellow comrades.
After returning home Alex worked as a carpenter, he operated a taxi business in Sydney Mines and later worked for Sears Canada until his retirement.
Alex is survived by his loving wife, Elaine (Merritt) Cole; sister, Irene (late Raymond) Perry, Halifax; brother, David (Evelyn) Cole, Dartmouth; along with many loving nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents Alex was predeceased by, sister, Hazel Florence (Cole) Clare, and one infant sister, Mary Love Cole.
There will be no visitation. A funeral mass to celebrate Alex’s life will be held Tuesday, March 16 at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, with Fr. Thomas John officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in St. Joseph’s Cemetery Sydney Mines.
Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
