PICTOU - J. William "Billy" White, of Cottage Street, Pictou, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 29, 2010, with family at his side in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. He was 93.
Born in Abney, P.E.I. in 1917, he was a son of the late William and Harriet (Roberts) White.
The last surviving member of his family, he was predeceased by brothers: Herman, Ray, Oliver; and sisters: Mildred, Lucy, Minnie, Annie, and Eva.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Ellen (Munn) White; and many nieces and nephews.
Billy moved to Pictou in 1958 where he was employed by Northumberland Ferries for 26 years, previously having worked in Hamilton, Ontario. He also fished and farmed on P.E.I. His hobbies were woodworking, gardening, and being a 'jack of all trades'. He enjoyed boxing, wrestling, and hockey. Billy loved children and everywhere he and Ellen lived, the children of the neighbourhood were always around.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 31, from 7-9 p.m. in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral service will take place Wednesday, September 1, at 2 p.m. from Pictou United Church, with Rev. Mary-Beth Moriarity officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will take place at a later date in Murray River Cemetery, PEI.
Donations would be greatly appreciated in lieu of flowers to the Pictou United Church or charity of choice.
