Phyllis Mary O'Connell

O'Connell, Phyllis Mary - Pugwash Point, Cumberland County, passed away April 13, 2011, in the North Cumberland Memorial Hospital, Pugwash, with her husband by her side. Born June 25, 1936, in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Rita (Beck) Bonang. If you were fortunate enough to have known Phyllis O’Connell then you know these things: Phyllis was a lady of poise, grace and quiet dignity. Phyllis was a teacher not only to her students but to her family and friends. Phyllis was also the more obvious things; devoted wife, loving mother, doting grandmother, true friend. If you sat at a table with Phyllis then you were sitting at the fun table. In her unassuming manner, Phyllis made all of us a little better for having known her. In her words: she led a full life. She loved her husband, her children, her family, her friends, and three amazing grandsons … no regrets. She was a member of the retired Teachers Association; the Remsheg Hookers (Wallace); the Northumberland Golf and Country Club; the Northumberland Curling Club and the St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Surviving are her husband, Robert O’Connell; daughter, Ruth Marie O’Connell, Amherst; son, Michael O’Connell, Campbell River, B.C.; grandsons, Anthony, Alex and David Manuele, all of Amherst; brother, Dr. Donald Michael (Patricia) Bonang, Seabright. There will be no visitation. The funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 16, in the St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Pugwash. Father David MacDonald officiating with a reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers donations in memory be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash, or any charity. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mundle’s Funeral Home, 204 Water St., Pugwash (243-2506).
