In St. Catharines, Ontario, on Dec. 10th 2017, William Alexander Matheson (B. A. King’s College/Dalhousie, M.B.A Western, M.A. Phd Carleton) passed away surrounded by loved ones. Son of the late Alec Matheson and his wife Lena MacAskill of Sydney, Nova Scotia. Dear brother of Marylyn Moules (Gerald) of Sydney, loving uncle of Alan Matheson Moules (Lynne), their son Alec Matheson Moules of Whitman Massachusetts and Rhonda Moules (Bruno Losier) of Ancaster Ontario. Bill was immensely proud of his time as a Professor at Brock University. He was the first Dean of Social Sciences and first Vice President. He was awarded the first Brock University Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching (1980) and the first Brock University Student Union Recognition of Excellence in Teaching (1994). In 2008 the Matheson Learning Commons, an interactive learning space for students, was named for Bill. In the larger community Bill served on the Board of the Niagara Symphony, as a director of the Niagara Regional Development Corporation, the Niagara Centre for Youth Care, Family and Children’s Services of Niagara, Contact Niagara and the Niagara Child and Youth Services Foundation. He served as a member of the Federal Advisory Committee on Judicial Appointments and as a Member of the Council of the Ontario College of Teachers. He was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Service medal for community service in 2002. At Bill’s request, there will be no funeral service. Cremation with internment of ashes in the family plot, Hardwood Hill Cemetery, Sydney N.S. will happen at a later date. Those who would like to remember Bill are invited to contribute to the Matheson Bursary, Brock University or the Niagara Foundation for Family and Children’s Services. The family would like to thank the staff on Two West and One East at Hotel Dieu Shaver Hospital in St. Catharines Ontario for their dedicated care and compassion during the past five months and Bill’s close circle of friends and retired colleagues from Brock University for their many visits, emails and conversations.
