Sheila (Ryan) MacDonald

Sheila (Ryan) MacDonald

Sheila (Ryan) MacDonald of Halifax NS, in her 94th year, on November 1, 2018. Survived by her husband of 67 years, Ian; her sister Evelyn “Babe” MacDonald of Ottawa and Florida, and children Jim (Lucille Hartshorne), Mark, Alex (Michael Arnoldi) and Janet (Paul Klements), and grandchildren Ian and Michael MacDonald. Survived also by many nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved and cared for in her own quiet way. Sheila was predeceased by her parents Peter and Frances Ryan, sisters Pat Fahie, Margaret Barnes, Marion Cowan, Doris DeWolfe, Marguerite Ryan and Katheline Pushie, and brother Peter Ryan. Sheila worked for the Department of Immigration at Pier 21 before marrying in 1951 and starting a family in Hantsport, NS. She thoroughly enjoyed her years living and traveling in Europe in the late 1950s with what were then two young children. These were experiences that she treasured for the rest of her life. She followed her husband across Canada as he was transferred in the military, creating comfortable homes for her family in places as diverse as Calgary, Whitehorse, Toronto and Kingston. Settling in the Halifax area after Ian’s retirement from the military and subsequent establishment of a dental practice in downtown Dartmouth, Sheila and Ian also enjoyed building their cottage in New London PEI in 1981 and then spending six months there every year, fondly staying “on the Island”. As a homemaker she will be remembered as an accomplished gardener, for her delicious sweets, and for the handcrafting skills that she developed later in life. Her memory will live on in the knitted sweaters and hand stitched quilts that she created and that are cherished family heirlooms. With many thanks to all of her wonderful caregivers, especially those who were so supportive and helpful the past six months. Visitation Monday November 5, 2018 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Cruikshanks Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St Halifax. Funeral Mass will be held at St Mary’s Basilica, Spring Garden Rd Halifax on Tuesday November 6, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. To leave an online condolence please visit www.cruikshankhalifaxfuneralhome.com Loved and missed always
