LAIRD (nee Coombe) - Geraldine Marquerite Laird 1928 – 2019. Geraldine Laird, beloved wife of Edwin Laird of Prince Albert, passed away at the Victoria Union Hospital on Monday February 4th at the age of 90 years. Gerry was born and raised in Prince Albert, “God’s country” as she described it, and spent her time committed to raising her family, supporting her church and volunteering in numerous community and club activities throughout Prince Albert and area. Edwin and Gerry were named Mr. and Mrs. Prince Albert Winter Festival in 2000. Gerry held many positions within the Anglican Church and active participation in the ACW lay-readership group. For over forty years, along with her husband Edwin, organized and began the Anglican Church service and spiritual guidance to many at Herb Bassett Seniors Home every Tuesday morning. Gerry and Edwin were the original founders and chief coordinators of Prince Albert’s Holy Trinity Anglican Church. Over the years Gerry has been recognized and awarded three “gold leaf” commemorations by the Victoria Union Hospital for her many years and countless hours of volunteerism, supporting the aged, sick, and disabled, ensuring dignity and gracious caring for all. In 1996, she also received the Anglican Church Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal. Both Edwin and Gerry received the “Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal for … indomitable spirit, lives for their sovereign, their country, their community, their church and their Legion.” She held a variety of positions at the Royal Canadian Legion including being the President of the Ladies Auxiliary numerous times and awarded a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Gerry was the very first Girls Softball Commissioner, helping to bring organized softball to young girls in and around Prince Albert, which still continues today. She loved traveling and organizing cruise ship trips with her friends, tours of Sicily, Italy, and Holland, Las Vegas or Reno. Gerry loved her flowers and gardening, and more importantly, spoiling her grandchildren at every occasion. Last year, Edwin and Gerry celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
