Catherine "Ada" Gillis (Mercer)

Passed on: April 3rd, 2019

of Dartmouth
With much sorrow, we the family of Catherine Ada Gillis announce she passed away peacefully on April 3, 2019 in the Dartmouth General Hospital. Ada was diagnosed with cancer on March 23rd and put up a valiant fight right to the end. Born in St. John’s, NL she was a daughter of the late Cecil and Florence Mercer. Ada lived in Dartmouth with her husband Jim. In earlier years, they lived in several maritime communities due to his employment with the Royal Bank. After attending St. Patrick’s Convent School and Holy Heart of Mary, Ada enjoyed her own career in banking and later in retail ladies wear sales, but her primary focus was looking after her family. She made friends easily in all of the places she lived. We will always remember the happy times and the family gatherings which Ada always took delight in hosting. She was very close to all of her sisters and spoke to them nearly every day. She was the heart of our family and she will be dearly missed. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Jim; daughter Kathy (David) Andrews, Oromocto, NB; son Dr. Jim Gillis Jr. (Dr. Cheryl DeYoung-Gillis), Windsor Junction; grandson Noah James Gillis, her pride and joy. She is also survived by her sisters, Mary “Peggy” Bourgeois, Madonna Cole, Lila Young and Elizabeth Cleary, all of St. John’s, NL; and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. A memorial Mass will be held at a later date with interment in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hope for Wildlife. Online condolences may be made by visiting the Dartmouth Chapel at www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com.
