Fred Palmer Russell

Passed on: April 19th, 2019

It is with deep sorrow we, the family of Fred Palmer Russell, announce his passing on April 19, 2019 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Fred was born April 3, 1928 in Sydney and was the son of Alison and Bessie (Mugford) Russell.
Dad will be lovingly missed and remembered by his daughters, Jeanne Russell, Margaret Anne Russell and Sharon Putt (Jim), and his grandchildren, Cherie McVicar, Holley Redmond (Jay) and Ryan Putt. Dad is also survived by his sister, Doreen MacKinnon (Fraser); sister-in-law, Jean Holley, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Dad was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Shirley; a sister, Margie; brother-in-law, Gordon Johnston, and his brother, Ross.
Fred was employed by the Canadian National Railway/Via Rail until his retirement in 1990. His love of trains continued after retirement as he became an avid collector of model railways which he cherished right up to his passing.
Being a very active and social person Dad belonged to numerous organizations and fund-raising groups, particularly important to him was the Philae Shriners Hospital for sick children, he was also extensively involved in the church, serving on many different committees. He was a dedicated member of the Masonic Lodge where he was past master in 1969.
When not volunteering or fundraising for most of his retirement, Dad would be golfing at Seaview in the summer and heading south to sunny Florida in winter.
Dad will be dearly missed by his family and friends. It gives great comfort that he is now reunited with our mother.
We are grateful for the comfort and care the nurses, staff and volunteers at the An Cala Palliative Care unit gave our father that allowed him a peaceful and dignified passing.
A funeral service will be held at the United Heritage Church on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Rosemary Godin officiating. Interment will take place in Hardwood Hill Cemetery, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Philae Shriner’s Hospital or a charity of one’s choice.
Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or emailed to sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
