Passed on: December 29th, 2011

It is with great sadness that we announce that our Dad passed away Dec. 29, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, An Cala Unit, Sydney, surrounded by his family.
He was not only a loving husband, father and grandfather, but also our best friend. He loved and lived for his family.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Jeremiah and Annie (Currie) Toomey and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Jake owned and operated Jerry’s Barber Shop in Glace Bay until his retirement several years ago. He loved spending time at the Casino, card night with the guys and his daily visits to Tim Hortons with his buddies Junior, Gordie and Charlie.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Jean Landru; son, Blaize (Cathy Morrison); daughter, Nancy (Rick MacKinnon), whom he thought of as his best friend; granddaughters, Chantel ‘Grampy’s little woman’, Tiara ‘Apple of his eye’; grandsons, Ricky and Jake; several nieces and nephews; two special nieces, Lulu and Donna.
Jake was predeceased by several brothers and sisters.
As per Jake’s request, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Saturday from 9-11 a.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Nancy Whitney-Latham, DML officiating. Interment at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Following the interment, Jake’s family invite all family and friends to join them for a reception at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home.
Family flowers only please. As an expression of sympathy for Jake, memorial donations in his memory may be made to Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Palliative Care, An Cala Unit, Sydney.
Online condolences to the family can be expressed at www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
Dad — It is so hard to see you go because you so wanted to live. We will always remember our last Christmas together at home. Your last words will always be a reminder of how much you loved us all. Rest in peace Dad. Never stop looking down on us.
