The family of Ian Kirk Beaton, regret to announce his passing at the Riverview Health Centre, Palliative Care Unit, Winnipeg, MB on Friday, Jan. 27, 2012 at the age of 63.
Ian was born on Nov. 1, 1948 in Pictou, N.S. to the late David and Isabella (MacLeod) Beaton. In 1953, he moved with his family to Glace Bay.
Ian spent the majority of his working years in various silver and gold mines in the Yukon Territory working in the mines and later as a millwright. Ian was a very hard worker with a very strong work ethic. After his retirement in 2002, he settled in Winnipeg, MB.
Ian enjoyed photography and was quite talented at editing photos to the benefit of various family members. He also enjoyed building his own computers and researching our family genealogy. He had a quick wit, a great sense of humour and loved watching sports, especially his interest in the UFC competitions, which he shared with his son, Jamus.
Ian is survived by his son, Jamus O’Brien, Edmonton AB. He is also survived by sisters, Ann (Leroy) Shipton, Slippery Rock, PA, Sheila Montpetit, Victoria , B.C., Sandra (Jim) McNeil, Hampton, N.B., Grace Capstick, Glace Bay, Donna (Victor) Koziel, Glace Bay, Ellen (Stewart) Wadden, Glace Bay; brothers, Gordon, Glace Bay, Philip, Vancouver, B.C. Ian is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Ian was predeceased by brothers, David and Alexander (in infancy); sisters Norma, MacDonald-Livingstone and Miriam (in infancy).
Cremation has taken place in Winnipeg, as per Ian’s wishes. A family service will take place at a yet to be determined date.
We would like to say thank you to Dr. Wong and the nursing staff of the 3rd East Palliative care unit for the excellent care they provided to Ian. We would also like to thank his homecare palliative care nurse Carol. A very special thank you to John and Rose Toner who watched over Ian when he was still at home and especially for their daily visits to him in palliative care when we were unable to do so. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
