With great sadness and heavy hearts we, the family of Thelma Chant, regret to announce her passing on Sunday, March 25, 2012, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Amelia (Milbourne) Leyte.
Thelma worked many years in Ontario and made countless good friends while there. She moved back home to Cape Breton in 1986.
Thelma was a loving wife and mother. She will be very sadly missed. Her smile and sense of humour will live with her family forever. She taught us what being beautiful truly meant.
Thelma is survived by her husband, Edwin; son, Roland; daughters, Olive Chant (Frank Cabot), Mary Ann Chant; grandchildren, Yvonne (Matt) Rimmer, Christine (Matt), Norma, Mathew, Lance, Holly, Garret, Carol, Mary Louise, Ashley, Plansue, Breanne, Sommer, David and great-grandchildren, Joshua, Brooklyn, Bryan, Katherine and Keira. She is also survived by sisters, Roberta Gale, Wileena Moore and brothers, Gordon (Elaine) Leyte, Reginald (Elizabeth) Leyte, and Rollie (Marguerite) Leyte. Thelma is also survived by Rosemary Powers, who held a special place in her heart.
Besides her parents, Thelma was predeceased by her granddaughter, Brittany.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 29, 2012, at St. Matthew Wesley Church, 2 Peppet St., North Sydney, with Rev. David Luker officiating. There will be a reception following the service at the church hall.
