Dorothy Lucille Hales, only daughter of Edith and Bedford Mackie, passed away in St. Albert, Alberta on September 26, 2012 at the age of 90.

She is survived by her loving family, daughter Bonnie (Joe) English and two sons Bill (Terri) Hales and Ross (Pam) Hales. She also leaves six grandchildren: Jordan (Sharmayne) English, Margot (David) Steele, Victoria (Mike) Read, Courtney (Art) Hassenrueck, Kelsey (Scott) Slemko, Cameron Hales, and six great-grandchildren: Damon and Halyn English, Tommy, Dugie and Mairi Steele, and Kaiya Slemko. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Bill Hales, in 1964 and her brothers Eldon Mackie and his wife Mary, and Bill Mackie and his wife Dorothy.

Born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, she was raised on the farm her father homesteaded near Valjean, Saskatchewan. Dorothy trained as an RN at Moose Jaw General Hospital and then attended the University of Manitoba, where she obtained her diploma in Teaching and Supervision. She taught Nursing at Moose Jaw General Hospital and later at the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, B.C. where she held the position of Director of Education Services until the time of her retirement in 1987.

Raising her family of three young children on her own following the untimely death of her husband, she focused on her family, nursing career, community and church. She lived for 51 years in the home she and her husband built on the neighbourly street of Pine Crescent in Kamloops. Relocating in 2007 to St. Albert to be closer to her family, she enjoyed residing at River Ridge for four years. In 2011, Dorothy moved into the Youville Home where she received attentive and loving care from the compassionate and dedicated staff.

A Celebration of her Life will be in St. Albert, Alberta. A Graveside Service will be held in Kamloops on Wednesday, October 3rd at 1:00 p.m. at Hillside Cemetery where Dorothy will be laid to rest with her husband. Reverend D. Bruce Comrie of Kamloops United Church will officiate.
