Joseph Anthony Melski, 60 of Sydney, passed away 7:30 Friday morning, Feb. 5, 2010 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of Janice (Kiec) and the late Anthony Melski.
Joe was a member or St. Mary’s Polish Parish, serving as past president of the St. Michael’s Polish Association. He worked as a salesman for Atlantic Meats. He loved sports, especially hockey and horse racing and was an avid gardener who took over the garden after his father passed away. He was particularly fond of summers spent at his cottage in Northside East Bay and always enjoyed his frequent trips to visit his brother, Terry in Boucherville, Quebec. Joe was well liked by those who knew him; a kind and willing helper when needed. He will especially be remembered by his family for the loving care he bestowed on his aging mother, in her time of need.
He is survived his brothers, Anthony Jr. (Anna), Michael (Ursula), Terrence (Selena) and Robert (Michelle); his sisters, Leona (James) Hamper, Anne (Charles) Stephen; by 18 nieces and nephews and 15 grandnieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Donald and Ronald.
Visitation for Mr. Melski will take place on Monday, Feb. 8 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Polish Church, Wesley Street, Sydney with Rev. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney. Reception after the mass at the Polish Village (corner of Victoria Road and Jamieson Street).
Donations to the Haitian Relief Fund or a charity of choice.
Joe was very proud of his Polish heritage.
