Gillies (Wood), Bernice Evelyn - It is with broken hearts that we acknowledge and announce the passing of our mother, our champion, Bernice Evelyn (Wood) Gillies on April 12, 2013. She was predeceased by her beloved son, “Johnny” (John Carl) and survived by her dearly loved children, Dougie, Shirley, Kyte, Bernard (Rosemary), Mary (Terrence) and her daughter- in- law, Karen; cherished grandchildren, Kyle (Shannon), Jenna, Lance (Jaclyn), Kelsie, Justine, Chad and Marissa; treasured great-grandchildren Hayden, Isla and Cassidy. She is also survived by her Aunt Veronica Clare Condon, Massachusetts and many extended family and will be deeply missed by many close friends. Born in New York, and at age three, moved from the big city to live with her grandparents in Port Hood. She married Alex Allan Gillies in 1953, widowed in 1964. Left with six children at a very young age, she thrived as both a mother and father. She was a personal care worker at Mary’s Hill Home, Mabou, for many years. She was a devoted member of St. Peter’s Parish, Port Hood, member of Eucharistic Adoration and recited the rosary on many occasions for the parish. She was a volunteer teacher at religion classes, member of the Catholic Women’s League and perpetual member of Our Mother of Sorrows Shrine, Mabou. In addition, she was actively involved in the Cursillo movement and attended weekly prayer group. In her daily life, she had a lively faith and deep devotion to prayer. She lived for her family and was a wonderful and concerned mother. She had a passion for playing the piano and hosted countless family gatherings. She enjoyed sunny days on her front deck with family and friends and loved working in her flower garden. She has always been and will continue to be a strong influence in all of our lives. You are invited to join us in the celebration of her life. Visitation will be from 2 pm to 9 pm on Monday, April 15 in Port Hood Resting Place. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 16 at St. Peter’s Church, Port Hood, with Rev. Andrew Gillies officiating; burial following in the St. Peter’s Cemetery.
