HICKS, AVIS - Avis Annie (Flemming) Hicks, 88, of Sussex and formerly of Havelock, passed away peacefully with family at her side, November 3, 2013 at the Sussex Health Centre. She was born in Howland Ridge, NB to the late Willie and Alberta (Young) Flemming, and grew up in the Millville area. Following graduation from Normal School in Fredericton, she spent three years as a school teacher in a one-room school. She was married in 1946 and became a pastor's wife with the gift of encouragement, and a Godly mother. She served with her husband in the Wesleyan (formerly Reformed Baptist) churches in Westchester, NS, Woodstock, NB, Yarmouth, NS, Havelock, NS, Hartland, NB and Sandford, NS. She taught school again in Weymouth, NS in the mid 1960's. With her sister, Olla, she helped her mother care for their aging father, and later brought her mother to her home and cared for her until her death in 2000. Avis and Bert enjoyed thirty years of retirement in Havelock, moving to Sussex one year ago. Avis was the beloved mother of Ross of Havelock, Brian (Fern) of Smiths Creek, Joan of Sussex and Janice Thomas (Reg) of Perth-Andover. Also survived by grandchildren Sarah and Tricia of Sussex, Timothy and Emma of Regina, SK, Ethan and Kiera of Sussex and great grandson Connor of Sussex; brother Floyd Flemming (Vonnie) of Clearwater, Florida, sister-in-law Marjorie Flemming of Lincoln and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her husband of sixty-six years, Rev. Bertram Hicks; parents Willie and Bertie Flemming; sister and brother-in-law Olla and Adrian Ingraham, brother Carl Flemming and sister-in-law Barbara Flemming.
Resting at Salisbury Funeral Home, 3350 Salisbury Road (372-4800) visiting will be Wednesday, November 6, 12 noon until the service at 2 p.m. with Rev. Reg Thomas officiating, assisted by Rev. Rob MacCallum and Rev. Jacob Ebbett. Interment to follow at Havelock Wesleyan Cemetery. Donations, if desired, to the Canadian Red Cross Sussex Branch or the Sussex Hospital Palliative Care Room Fund would be appreciated by the family. www.keirsteads.ca
