Passed in: Inverness, Canada
Passed on: August 31st, 2014

It is with true sorrow that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of Joseph Francis MacDonald, at Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital on Aug. 31, 2014, at the age of 82.
Born in Inverness, Cape Breton, Francis was the son of the late Rory and Sarah (MacLellan) MacDonald.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Corrine (MacPherson); sons, Scott (Barbara), Centreville, Rod (Leanna), Herring Cove, Frank (Rose), Inverness, and daughters, Cathy (Reinhard), East Bay and Bonnie (Rob), Sydney. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Francis was predeceased by all of his 12 siblings, Helen, John Angus, Donald, Annie Mae, Malcolm, John Andrew, Hughie ‘H’, Margaret Ann, Theresa, Rita, Roderick and Florence (the last two having died in infancy).
Francis served 23 years with the Canadian Armed Forces, 10 of which were with the 1st and 2nd Battalion Black Watch Pipe Bands as a piper. When he retired from the military in 1973, he returned with his family to his beloved Margaree/Inverness – his home, which inspired much of his writing and compositions during his years away. Amongst his many life accomplishments, he was also a carpenter, musician (fiddler), singer, composer and artist. He was, throughout his life, an ardent ambassador for the Scottish music, roots, culture and Gaelic language that were his passion. It was a passion that he infused to his children and grandchildren as well, many of whom are musicians, composers and artists, and who will always carry the legacy of his love.
