HOLDEN, Margaret Irene, 89, Jordan Falls passed away peacefully in Roseway Hospital on Wednesday, April 29, 2015. Margaret was born in Saint John, New Brunswick on August 6, 1925. Her teaching career started at the age of 17. After graduating from Normal College, she spent many summers in Halifax up grading her license while raising her 5 children. She treated all the students like her own and kept in touch with many of “her kids.” She taught in Shelburne County for 37 years. After she retired, she combined her love of travel with her passion for teaching and volunteered as a remedial reading teacher in England and Florida, her winter home. She stayed actively involved in the education system through the Nova Scotia Reading Association and the Retired Teachers’ Association. Her husband, Ralph was an avid gardener and she enjoyed working in her flower gardens which were full of her favourite tulips. Her love of the outdoors was spent walking, especially on the beach at Louis Head at her beloved cottage, “Sand Dollar.” Many happy hours were spent there with family and friends. Margaret was the longest standing member of the Jordan Falls Baptist Church, having joined in 1941. She served as church clerk, Sunday school teacher and was a member of the Missionary Society. A true matriarch, Margaret was a smart, strong and quick witted woman who was loved and admired by her family and her many friends. She is survived by sons , David (Nanette); Russell (Marjorie); daughters, Sheila (Elgin) Thomas; Linda Dirksen; grandchildren, Jody, Cory, Darian, Mark, Toby, Julian, Steven, Angela, Virginia, and Daniel; as well as 12 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph and her son, Allan. Funeral was held on Saturday, May 2nd in the Jordan Falls Baptist Church with Pastor David Hopper officiating. Burial in Lake John Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Jordan Falls Baptist Church.
