Born in Sault St. Marie, Ontario in 1927, Whip moved to Sydney from Saint John in 1947 to play hockey for the Sydney Millionaires where he met his wife of 63 years, the former Bertilla MacDonald.

After an injury ended his hockey career, Whip went to work for the Cape Breton Post in Sydney. After retirement, he and Bertilla enjoyed travelling the world from Florida, to Spain to Mexico but always returning to Margaree Forks to spend time fishing the Margaree River, golfing in Cheticamp and spending time with family.
