PICTOU – Hilda Martha Nicholson, 1914-2008, of Pictou, passed away September 29, 2008, in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, in her 94th year. Hilda was a resident of the Town of Pictou for over 75 years. Born in Middleboro, Cumberland County, she was a daughter of the late Mansefield and Elizabeth (Fisher) O’Brien. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been predeceased by brothers: Charlie, Harry, Andy, Earl, Arthur; and sisters: Sarah, Nellie, Edna, and Alma. She is survived by daughters, Doretta Russell, Edna (David) Theakston; and son, James (Beth); grandchildren: James (Margo), Mona (Bob), Hilda-Anne (Bill), Margo (Ron), Max (Gail), Simone (Michael), Terry-Lee, Kreg (Laurie), Jillian (Donnie), Andrew (Rachelle); great-grandchildren: Hayley, Noah, Meghan, Alyson, Amanda, Kimberley, Robert, Alisha, Amelia, Jeana, James, Cameron, William; great-great-granddaughter, Serenity. Also surviving is sister-in-law, and longtime friend, Rhoda O’Brien; and special friend, Gladys Knowles; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, James; son-in-law, Harold Russell; and granddaughter, Lorna. Nannie devoted her life to her family and church, and enjoyed gardening, music, knitting, rug hooking, cooking, and shopping. She was a faithful member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Pictou, from where her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 2, with Jacquie Ross and Rev. Joanne Vines officiating. Interment will be in Seaview Cemetery. Visitation will take place 2-4, and 7-9 p.m. today in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Donations in her memory may be made to the V.O.N., the Palliative Care Society, or the St. Andrew’s Church.
