95, Sydney With broken hearts, the family of Mary C. ‘Toots’ Surette,, formerly of 393 Columbia St., Sydney, announce her peaceful passing at Maple Hill Manor, New Waterford. Mom went to Heaven, surrounded by her devoted family on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, at the age of 95. Born in Sydney, N.S., Aug. 13, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Jim and Florence MacNeil and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mom or ‘Ma’ as she was most affectionately known, was predeceased by her husband, Louis C. Surette, her eldest son, Lou and her youngest daughter, Linda. Also predeceased by brothers, John, Vince, Eddie, Jimmy and Jackie and by sisters, Maude, Maggie, Katie, Cecelia, Rosie, Elizabeth and Vange. Mom is survived by sons, Jimmy (Judy), Eddie (Mary), Cliff (Renie) and her special son, Neil, at home; daughters, Mary Rose, Judy and Dianne; 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Mom’s love of family and deep religious faith sustained her throughout her life. She was a faithful member of St. Theresa’s parish and a member of the CWL. Mom’s door was always open to family and friends and we will always cherish her sunny disposition and great sense of humour. When you entered her home, she would leave you no choice, but to have a ‘bite to eat’, which always included some of her delicious home baking. Mom’s favourite pastimes were spent baking and tending to her garden, which she lovingly developed throughout the years. Although her passing has left a deep void in our lives, we are extremely grateful to have had our Mom with us for so many years. She has left her family a legacy which we are so proud to carry on. Visitation for Mrs. Surette will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday, Sept. 18 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass to take place at St. Theresa’s Church on Friday, Sept. 19 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Family flowers only by request. Memorials in Mom’s name may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre, Regional Hospital. “God’s garden must be beautiful, because he only takes the best.” Rest in Peace, Mom, Till we all meet again. We love you. Condolences may be sent to the family at sydneymemorialchapel@ns.symptico.ca.
