With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Bill Townsend on May 26, 2009, in the Palliative Care Unit, of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, April 22, 1945, he was the son of the late Margaret ‘Bee’ and Carl Townsend of Sydney.
Bill was an avid bowler participating in many leagues over the years, most recently the Senior’s Men Pro League on Tuesday nights and the Sysco Plant League on Thursday nights. In 2008, he was named sportsman of the year in both leagues. Driving his motorcycle, enjoying coffee with friends at Tim Hortons and spending time at the casino were the things he loved to do.
Bill was born with cerebral palsy and despite his disabilities, he accomplished a lot over the years. He fought his battle with cancer since October 2007 enduring a long hard struggle. He was an inspiration to everyone who knew him.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his two nephews, Stephen Townsend in 1992 and Richard Lindsay in 2007. He was also predeceased by three uncles, Harold Peach, J.Q. Stuewe and Warren Dolbin.
Bill is survived by two sisters, Shirley McLean, Sydney, with whom he resided, Louise Lindsay (Joe), West Vancouver; two brothers, Richard (Jean), Sydney, Jim, Toronto; one nephew, Brian Morrison, Sydney; one niece, Julie Gordon, Kelowna, B.C.; three aunts, Gladys Peach, Halifax, Shirley Stuewe, Dartmouth, and Vern Dolbin, Etobicoke, Ont.; as well as several cousins.
Visitation will be held Friday, May 29 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney from 2-4 and 7-9:30 p.m. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Sheldon Chant officiating.
Interment to follow in Hardwood Hill Cemetery. Reception to follow at the funeral home.
