Magarvey, Raymond Halliday - 98, of Kentville, died on April 3, 2011 in the Veterans’ Unit, Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Parker’s Cove, he was the son of the late Archibald and Sarah Hester (Halliday) Magarvey. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, the former Ruby North of Canning. Also surviving are daughter, Shirlean (James) Gear of Edmonton, Alberta; son, Glen (Doris) of Bedford; granddaughter, Valerie Wallace of Edmonton; and great-granddaughters, Sierra, Keanna and Keltie Wallace of Edmonton. Raymond was predeceased by brothers, Donald, Victor, Jesse, Frederick, and infant brother, Gerald. Ray was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He lived in Wolfville for 41 years where he was a member and former Deacon of the Wolfville United Baptist Church. His early education was at Parker’s Cove school, Annapolis Royal Academy and the Provincial Normal College. He taught school for several years in the rural schools of Nova Scotia. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served with the RCAF and RAF in England and Northwest Europe. Following demobilization, he attended Acadia University where he was the recipient of several prizes and scholarships including the Governor General’s medal for the class of 1949. After graduate studies at McGill, he was appointed to the Faculty of Science at Acadia where his academic career spanned 27 years, 14 of which were as head of the Physics Department. Ray was very prominent in the early days of sponsored scientific research at Acadia. He published numerous papers in leading scientific and engineering journals. He served on the Senate of Acadia, on many important University committees, and was a former vice-president of the Acadia Alumni Association. For 36 years, Ray was associated with the Nova Scotia Research Foundation and its successor, the Nova Scotia Research Foundation Corporation, as a research scientist, administrator, and member of the Board of Directors. He was a former president of the Nova Scotia Institute of Science (Valley Chapter) and a member of the Meteorological Committee of the National Research Council. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society of London and had many other memberships in scientific societies and associations. He was awarded the Centennial Medal in 1967, “in recognition of valuable service to the nation”. On retirement, Acadia conferred on him the degree Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa and he was given the rank of Professor Emeritus. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. No visitation and no flowers by request of the family, but donations, in memory, may be made to a charity of choice. A private family interment will be held at a later date in Willow Bank Cemetery in Wolfville. Arrangements have been entrusted to White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
