ALLEN, Barbara Mae - age 79 of the Meadows Home for Special Care, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2018 at the Meadows. Born in Richfield, Yarmouth Co. N.S. on August 20, 1939 she was the daughter of the late Austin and Edith (Nickerson) Allen. Barbara’s life was dedicated to her three great loves, children, teaching and her family. She started her teaching career in a 1 room schoolhouse in Raynardton, then onto teaching down shore for a year, Carleton for 2 years, Quebec for 3 years and then came home to teach grade 1 at Carleton Elementary School for the remainder of her career. Although she retired in 1993, she continued to volunteer her time reading to children at the school. She was devoted to her family and taking care of her mom. She enjoyed history and genealogy and continued to pursue higher education throughout her career and upgraded to achieve the equivalent to a master’s degree in teaching. She is survived by her brother, Richard (Margaret) Allen, Beaver River. Although she didn’t have any children of her own her nieces, nephews, cousins and neighbourhood kids were treated as so. She is also survived by her nephews, Jason (Rochelle) Roy-Allen, Edmonton; Blair Allen, Yarmouth; Carl Allen, Greenfield, N.S.; niece, Trish Pulito, Toronto; great nephews, Munro, Mike, Jessie, Chris, Amedeus and Oliver. She had many cousins locally and out west that she adored. A special thank you to her friends and neighbours for their friendship and kindness especially, Sheri Doucette, Donna Hessie and the late Patricia “Pat” Tinkham/Quinn. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her brother, Gene (Marlene) Allen. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. Visitation was held Saturday, December 22, 2018 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral service took place Sunday, December 23, 2018 at 2 P.M. from Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Reverends Jonathan Cann and Mike Cannell officiated. Interment followed in Forest Glen Cemetery. A reception followed the burial in the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church basement. In lieu of flowers donations in memory may be made to the Carleton School Breakfast Program, or Carleton School donations for student needs through Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth.
