It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas Michael McPhee, age 74, on Friday, April 19, 2019 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Doug grew up on “Tin Can Alley” in the North End of Sydney. After 33 years of service, he retired from The Sydney Steel Plant, where he worked in the open hearth and scrap yard departments. Doug was the Boston Bruins #1 fan and he had a great love for animals. He also loved music, especially the British Invasion and enjoyed spending time in the country.
Doug was predeceased by his parents, Hughie and Mary (Delaney) McPhee; wife, Millie (Risk) McPhee; daughter, Carrie; sister, Mary (McPhee) Mossop; and brothers, Eddy, Danny and Gerald. He was also predeceased by his in-laws, Archie and Frances Risk, Winnie Risk and Patsy Brewer.
Doug is survived by his twin brother, Stanley (Mary); niece and nephew, Charlene and Christopher; and son-in-law, Sandy Fraser. He is also survived by his in-laws, A.J. Risk, Art (Gayle) Risk, Eddy Risk, Charlie Risk, Ricky Risk, Peggy (Glen) Watts and Elizabeth Risk.
Thank you to the VON nurses, especially Ashley, the homecare workers, EHS, the 4A girls, Dr. Tom Currie and all of the emergency department staff. Special thanks to Ray Rolfe for being a good friend to Doug all his life. Also, to Eddie and Cathy Oakley and Jeanette Hiscock for being wonderful neighbours and always bringing him treats.
A graveside service will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
