Shirley Elaine ROSE

Shirley Elaine Rose, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at Gables Lodge Amherst. Born in Springhill, Shirley was a daughter of the late Robert and Grace Pugsley. Shirley was a member of Trinity St. Stephen's United Church in Amherst for over sixty years. She participated in UCW and other church activities as well as the Y's Menettes Group of Amherst, where she acted as president and held other offices. She enjoyed volunteering for different organizations when able and was awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award for her many accomplishments. Shirley and Austen enjoyed the family cottage in Lorneville for many years as well as many years of camping while members of the the Fly Way Campers Club in Amherst. Shirley graduated from Springhill High School and then attended Provincial Normal College in Truro. She later attended St. Charles Business School, after which she was employed in the Maritime Tel & Tel Business Office in Amherst for nine years. Shirley later returned to teaching at schools in Amherst, West Highland, and Acadia St., retiring in 1985, after twenty years of service. Shirley will also be remembered fondly by students, staff and teachers. Shirley is survived by her husband of sixty-one years, C. Austen Rose, two daughters, Carol Ann of Tidnish and Sharon (Dave Mason), of Newcastle, ON; special grandchildren, Thomas Victor Mason-Rose and Severn Mason-Rose; a brother, Douglas Pugsley, of Cambridge, ON, as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Leon. Arrangements are under the care and supervision of the Jones Family Funeral Centre, 70 Church Street, Amherst (902-667-8777) from where visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 from 12:30 pm until the time of the funeral at 2 pm. Rev. Natasha Pearen presiding. Interment will be held in the spring in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Oxford. Donations in memory of Shirley may be made to the Cumberland Health Care Foundation or Trinity St. Stephen United Church.
