Carolyn Ann Matthews

Carolyn Ann Matthews

It is with sorrowful hearts that we announce the passing of Carolyn Ann Matthews (age 73) on Tuesday May 21, 2019. Carolyn passed away peacefully at the palliative care unit in Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines she is the daughter of the late Hugh Matthews and Sarah (Hayward) Matthews.
Carolyn was a fun loving, beautiful lady who was loved by everyone who knew her. Her spirit was larger than life and she turned ordinary moments into an extravaganza. Her zest and zeal for life was felt immediately upon knowing her. She had the remarkable gift of making you feel like you were the most important person in the room. Carolyn loved to do cross stitch and puzzles, tending to her various gardens and roses. She loved decorating her beach house and soaking in her glorious harbour view. She loved to host and throw dinner parties and had a passion for travel. She was a devoted advocate for the clean-up of Lockmans beach.
Carolyn was born and raised in Sydney Mines and moved to Toronto in her twenties. She
worked at various jobs throughout her life. She worked at an insurance agency but then found a perfect fit at Sun Quest travel agencies where she finished her career. This was a dream job which enabled her to travel, which of course was her passion.
Of all of Carolyn’s loves in life, I think her role as Auntie Carolyn is the one that gave her the most joy. She loved her niece and great nieces and nephews and great nephews fiercely.
She is survived by her sister, Melvena Mann (Jack Mann); brother, Ron Matthews (Bev Devison); brother, Tom Matthews (Betty Matthews). Also left to mourn her are her niece and nephews, John and Debbie Mann, Ronnie and Brad Matthews, Trevor, Robert and Todd Matthews; great nieces and nephews, Terilynn, John Lee, Jared Mann, Gavin and Lauren Matthews and great-great-nephew Nate Mann.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by her sister, June Matthews and brother, Robert Matthews.
Carolyn was devoted to her family and friends. Her loss has left a painful void in the hearts of all who loved her. No words can express how much we will truly miss our beloved Carolyn.
Carolyn wished to thank everyone who came to visit her in hospital and those who helped her through her journey in life. All too many to name. A special thanks to Tom and Betty Matthews for all of the time spent with her in the hospital and for all of the traveling back and forth, and Ron Matthews and Bev Devison for all of your unwavering support. To Jack and Melvena Mann, Joan and Jim Fiander, Tara Deveau, Carolyn Murphy, and lifelong friend, Mary Jane Elliott, your support meant the world to her. To her niece, Debbie Mann, a heartfelt thank you for looking after her. You all went above and beyond for her. She loved you all so much!
Special thanks to the palliative care unit at the Cape Breton Regional hospital for their wonderful care.
A funeral service will be held at Carman United Church, on Clyde Avenue in Sydney Mines on Saturday, June 8th at 3 p.m. with Rev. Nick Phillips officiating.
