NEW GLASGOW – It is with deep sadness that the family of Bruce Thomas George Tobin announces his sudden passing at the age 92 on Monday, July 29, 2019 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Bruce was a son of the late George and Phyllis Amelia (Davis) Tobin. He was born and raised in Toronto, Ont, spending many summers with family in Hastings, Ont. Bruce served in the Royal Canadian Navy for 27 years, serving on the HMCS Portage, HMCS Warrior, HMCS Magnificent, HMCS Bonaventure, HMCS Micmac, and HMCS Crusader, retiring with the rank of Chief Petty Officer 1st Class. Bruce’s last posting was in London, England with the Canadian Defense Liaison Staff. After retiring from the Navy, he had a 20-year career with Michelin Canada, Granton. His career with Michelin was administrative where he was involved with many initiatives such as company policies and the Bib Magazine. Bruce was very community minded, serving in many capacities. He served as Commanding Officer for the Admiral Murray Sea Cadets Corps. Bruce served on the Board of Directors for the Credit Union. He was a member of the Stellarton Male Chorus and the Royal Canadian Legion Choir. Bruce was a director with the Pictou County Prostate Cancer Support Group Association and a member of the Bluenose Curling Club. He enjoyed photography and working with computers. Bruce was a member of First United Baptist Church, New Glasgow where he had served as chair of the Board of Management and various other capacities within the church. Bruce loved a party; he was an excellent planner and never happier than when surrounded by family and friends. Many will remember Bruce’s 80th Birthday Celebration at Pictou Lodge. He was a gentleman who will be missed by those he loved. Surviving are his wife, Jacqueline “Jackie” (Covey), Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow; children, Michael (Sheila), Pictou; Darren (Terri), London, Ont.; Kelly Tobin, Stellarton; Christopher “Chris” (Denise), Churchville; sister, June Knowles, Calgary, Alta.; grandchildren, Jana, Tyler, Mitchell (Meghan), Joel (Samantha), Danielle, Craig (Chimonay); great-grandchildren, Brady, Brandon, Chelsea, Jacob, Caleb, Evelyn and Rosaleen; many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Muriel, Hazel and Ruby; brother, Melville. The family will receive visitors 2-2:50 p.m. Friday, August. 2nd in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home Chapel, New Glasgow from where funeral service will be held 3 p.m. with Rev. Alfred Woodworth officiating. Interment will be in Seaview Cemetery, Pictou.
