HENNING: Freda (nee Blanke), of Swift Current, passed away August 18, 2012 at 91 years of age. She was born November 25, 1920 in Katensen, Province of Hanover, Germany to Ernest Blanke and Frieda Blanke (nee Fricke). At three years of age, she and her mother sailed to Halifax on the Empress of Scotland, her father having come to Canada six months earlier. From there they took the train to Swift Current. Her first home was along Lac Pelletier Trail where she attended Spring and Montford schools. Several years later, another move was made closer to Wymark where she completed her Grade 12. She then furthered her education at Moose Jaw Normal School where she became a teacher. Her first school was at Beaver Flat, north of Waldeck, and she also taught at Turnhill School. She fondly remembered her pupils, often referring to them as "my kids". It was while she was teaching at Beaver Flat that she met her future husband, Ted, and they were married on January 15, 1944. They farmed in the Beaver Flat district until 1951, then moved to the Prairie View District and continued to grain farm, milk cows, and raise cattle, pigs and chickens. She played an active role in the farming operation. Freda always had huge vegetable and flower gardens. She excelled in growing geraniums, starting hundreds of slips each spring. Throughout her life she had a passion for cutting articles of interest out of newspapers, which is evident by the great number of binders she had carefully sorted the clippings into. Crocheting, knitting and sewing filled the winter months, during which time she created many crocheted doilies, baskets, bedspreads and afghans. In 1965 the family moved to Swift Current and Ted and Freda continued to farm from town for the next 7 years. During this time, she had gardens in both the city and at the farm. Another move in 1981 took them to Walsh Trail and in 2000 she moved to Cypress Drive. She thoroughly enjoyed the past 4 years living in the Bentley, especially the Wednesday night entertainment and bingo on Monday and Friday evenings. She had many good friends and neighbours throughout her life. She enjoyed attending auctions and garage sales as a collector, and was best known for her assortment of 125 gravy boats. She was predeceased by her husband Ted, August 13, 1989, her mother Frieda, February 28, 1936, father Ernest, November 18, 1975; brother-in-law Jack Stewart, May 9, 2008 and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis (Derek) Dewar, Hazlet, SK, and Janice (Daryl) Thoreson, Cabri, SK, three grandchildren Evan Dewar of Calgary, AB., Deneille Dewar of Hong Kong, and Trent Dewar of Hazlet, SK, sister Margaret Stewart and half-brother Henry (Trudy) Blanke, cousins Martha Wymer and Walter (Cecile) Blanke all of Swift Current and cousin Margarete Aggen of Germany. She was baptized, confirmed and married in the Lutheran Faith. The Funeral Service was held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, August 23, 2012 from Mount Calvary Lutheran Church with Pastor Greg Kiel officiating. A eulogy was presented by her daughter Phyllis. The Organist was Kathy Gartz, with special music provided by "Archie and the Boys". The ushers were Lois Frohlich and Karen Fox.
