George Edward MacKay, 82 of Charles Street, Trenton, formerly of Stellarton and Thorburn, passed away January 22, 2013 at home.
Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Francis (Frank) and Lucy (Urquhart) MacKay.
George was a resident of Trenton for the past three years having previously resided in Stellarton and Thorburn.
George was a veteran having served 13 years with the Black Watch. He worked at Michelin for some 20 years from where he retired. He was a member of Branch 28 Royal Canadian Legion, Stellarton. He played hockey and ball in his younger years, and enjoyed fishing, darts and crib.
He is survived by his wife the former Dorothy (Harkness) Hughes MacKay, Trenton; daughters: Ruthann Hughes, Edmonton; Tina Davis, Florida; Sylvia Louis, Iron Rock; Karen (Larry Ryan), Stellarton; sons, Gerry (Karen) MacKay, Truro; George (Dawn) MacKay, Lantz; step-daughters, Catherine (Robert) Fraser, Trenton; Jane (Darrell) Murphy, Brantford, Ont.; step-son George (Wanda) Simms, New Glasgow; sisters, Lucy (George) Lees, Millbrook; Ora Best, Westville; a brother, Everett (Winnie) MacKay, Stellarton; brother-in-law Peter Embree, Port Hawkesbury; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother Francis “Bud” MacKay, a son-in-law George Hughes, sisters: Jennie MacKay, June MacKay Cummings and Jean MacKay Embree.
His remains will rest in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Chapel, Stellarton for visiting from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday. Royal Canadian Legion Branch 28 Stellarton will meet at the funeral home at 6:30 p.m. Friday to conduct their tribute service.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday from the H.W. Angus Funeral Home Chapel with Captain Neil Abbott presiding. Cremation to follow with burial of ashes to take place in the Thorburn Cemetery at a later date.
A reception will follow the funeral at the Royal Canadian Legion, Stellarton.
Family flowers only. Donations in memory of George may be made to the Palliative care Society of the Aberdeen Hospital.
