It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving Mother, Jean, age 83, on Sunday, February 3, 2013 at the Health Sciences Centre. Predeceased by her parents: Matthew Maddigan of Witless Bay and Martha Penney of Harbour Main; husband Vincent of 49 years; her brother Michael; infant grandson Nicholas Hanrahan-Abbott; and niece Denise (Roche) Comerford. Leaving to mourn are her four daughters: Colleen (John G. Abbott), Alanna O’Brien, Moya (Randy Hewlett) and Sheilagh (Roger Guy); her sister Rita Roche and her children: Sharon, Barry and Shawn and their families, and devoted younger sister Bernadette Maddigan. Also leaving to mourn are Maura Hanrahan (Paul Butler) and their daughter Jemma; special friends: Bridie Roche, Kay Spurrell, Lee Rainey and members of the Cheeseman family. Jean was born in Hamtramck (Detroit), USA and raised in Witless Bay. After graduation from a commercial course she worked with the Department of Education, left to have her family, returning to work with the Adult Education Division until she retired. She had fond memories of her years with the Department and respect for it leaders (Dr. Alain Frecker, Messrs Conran & Hanley, and latterly John Courage). Jean loved being with her family, travelling with them, and being in the garden. She was respectful of her home community, valued the contribution of the Church and the Presentation sisters from whom she received her education. She will be resting at Caul's Funeral Home with visitation Monday, February 4 from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday, February 5 from 2-4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. Funeral Mass to be held on Wednesday, February 6 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Pius X Church, Smithville Crescent. Burial to take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, Witless Bay, following the funeral mass.
