Margaret Dorothy Urquhart passed away peacefully early on the morning of March 6, 2013.
Dorothy had recently celebrated her 103rd birthday at Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility in Sydney. Prior to that she resided with her cousin Enid Johnstone at Forbes Court enjoying the Cape Breton summers. She lovingly spent her winters on Nettles Island in Florida.
Dorothy was born in 1910 along with her twin brother Alexander in Saint John, N.B. She moved to Sydney as a youngster, attended Central School, Sydney Academy, and Empire business school.
Determined to follow a career in nursing she headed off to New York and trained at Long Island College Hospital School for nursing. She proudly received her degree in 1929. While in training she happened to meet Alexander Urquhart, a childhood friend from Sydney. They were married in 1932 in New York.
They spent their working careers in New York, and later retired to Loch Lomond, N.B., until Al passed away in 1993.
She had a very active nursing career, which she continued into her 70s. She remained very active and enjoyed playing bridge, swimming, painting, and was an excellent bocce player which she continued to play and do well at into her late 90s.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Alexander and his wife Kathleen, along with grandsons, Scott (Kristi), Mark (Marcy) and four great-grandchildren, Alexander Johnstone ‘AJ’, Faith, Ethan and Alex all located in the Seattle, Wash. area.
Her passing was also preceded by brothers, Alexander and George, and sister, Betty, as well as parents William F. Baxter and Mary Agnes Johnstone.
Cremation has taken place. Prayers were said at the funeral home by Rev. Thomas Went. A memorial service, and a celebration of her life will held later in the spring to allow family members to travel to Sydney.
