Mary Louise Garcia died peacefully at Glace Bay Hospital on Aug. 26, 2013.
Born in Glace Bay on Aug. 14, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Cora (Pass) MacLean.
Mary lived most of her life in the Caledonia-Morien Hill neighbourhoods, Glace Bay. As a young woman she spent several years in New Brunswick and Manitoba, where her children were born.
Mary was a hard worker. She was a long time employee of Sobeys, Glace Bay, retiring in 1994.
She loved to bake and cook and was happy to share with family and friends. She loved her dog and constant companion, "Benji."
Mary was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
She is survived by her son, Randy Garcia (Sylvia Daigle), Moncton, N.B.; daughter, Wendy Gillis (Rev. Rod), Halifax, N.S.; grandchildren, Ian Gillis (Marie Lavallee) Marriott's Cove, N.S., Rev. Anna Hoeg (Walter), Indian Harbour, N.S., Neil Gillis, Halifax, N.S., Peter Gillis (Kristin Tanswell), Fredericton, N.B.; great-granddaughters, Ruah Hoeg and Shelley Blinkhorn-Hoeg, Indian Harbour, N.S.; sister, Shirley Holloway, Glace Bay, N.S.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, Raymond in 1975, longtime friend, Alex MacNeil and sisters, Myrtle Legnaro and Helen Jack.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, where a visitation will take place Thursday, Aug. 29, 7-9 p.m. and Friday, Aug. 30, 2-3 p.m. followed by a funeral home service and reception the same day at 3 p.m. Rev. Donald MacDonald will be officiating. Interment will take place at Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay.
The family would like to express their appreciation to all those who provided care and comfort, including Dr. Fairfield, the staff of 3 West and 3 South, Glace Bay Hospital, The VON, Home Care providers, and all who visited Mom in the hospital. A special thank you is extended to her neighbours, Darlene and Nola for their friendship and all their visits both at home and in the hospital.
Donations in Mary’s memory may be made to the Cape Breton branch of the SPCA, or charity of choice.
