It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Luigi Cesare Rastelli, age 78, of Stellarton on October 27, 2013, in the Palliative Care Unit, Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
A beloved husband, father and nonno (grandfather), Luigi passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, after suffering a stroke.
Son of Oreste and Lina (Mezzadri) Rastelli, he was born in Fiorenzuola, Italy in 1935, and immigrated to Canada in 1958, where he built a wonderful life for his family.
He came to Stellarton for a two-year work term, but the friendships he made kept him here for the remainder of his life.
He worked at Donato Faini Textiles for 13 years before starting his own business – Rare Knits Ltd., which he and his wife and true love, Elsa, operated for 33 years. Knitting machines from their operation can be found on permanent display at the Museum of Industry in Stellarton.
Luigi loved life, his family, and his friends. He enjoyed golf, bowling and summers at the cottage. He had a wonderful singing voice and was often asked to sing Italian songs for his friends and family. He was passionate about soccer, food, his children and grandchildren, and what life had to offer. He certainly enjoyed teaching his son, son-in-law, grandchildren and closest friends how to make his wine – a tradition that will continue.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elsa; daughter, Patrizia (Ron Patterson); son, Massimiliano (Max) (Romi Foley); and grandchildren, Connor and Nathan.
He was predeceased by his father Oreste, sister Angela, and mother Lina.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by request. A service celebrating Luigi’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Stellarton. Reception will follow at the Sister Catherine Steele Centre.
Friends will be welcome to share a few memories or words.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Luigi may be made to the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society or to a charity of one's choice.
