Sister Mary Roselina McMahon, 97, a sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the motherhouse, on Sunday, June 22, 2014. She was in the 73rd year of religious life.
Born in Dominion, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Peter and Winnifred (McMurray) McMahon and was the second youngest of 11 children.
Sister Roselina entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha in 1939. In 1941 she pronounced her first vows and made her perpetual commitment Aug. 15, 1944.
After graduating in 1946 with certification as an X-ray technician, Sister Roselina worked as an X-ray technician and in management for 40 years. She served in Nova Scotia at St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Glace Bay, and at St. Mary’s Hospital, Inverness; in Alberta at St. Michael’s Hospital, Lethbridge and at Mineral Springs Hospital, Banff. Roselina was a member of the Canadian Society of Radiological Technicians since 1948, and in 1970 she was granted advanced certification. In 1966, she was certified as a hospital departmental manager with a specialty in diagnostic radiography. She retired from x-ray in 1983.
For the next eight years, Sister Roselina was in the Pastoral Care Departments of St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish, and the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. She served as coordinator at Bethany, the Motherhouse, for six years, and as the local community leader in two of the houses in which she lived. Sister Roselina was a woman of exemplary service throughout her long and fruitful life.
Sister Roselina was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was predeceased by six sisters, Frances MacIsaac, Helen Whalen, Margaret MacNeil, Sr. Mary Beatrice, a Sister of St. Martha, and Srs. Mary Peter and Agnes Winifred, both Sisters of Charity of Halifax; and by four brothers: Thomas, James, William and Peter. Left to mourn her loss are several dearly loved nieces and nephews.
The remains are resting at Bethany, the Motherhouse, beginning at 1:15 pm on Wednesday, June 25, 2014. A Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, June 26, at 2 p.m. in the Bethany Chapel.
