Melvin and Sandra Hollstein of Kyle, Sask. were taken from us suddenly on Monday January 12, 2015. Melvin was born May 3, 1933 in Tuberose , Sask. to Marie and Henry Hollstein. Sandra was born September 18, 1937 in Kindersley, Sask. to Turner and Violet Strouts. Sandra grew up in Milden, Sask. and attended Teachers College in Saskatoon. Melvin grew up on the family farm north of Kyle and attended Coteau and Tuberose schools then joined his father on the farm. Sandra began her teaching career in Kyle in 1956. She met and married Melvin on August 14, 1958 and together they raised their children, Shelley, Bonnie and Kelly on the family farm. Sandra retired from teaching in 1976 to farm with Melvin. Melvin and Sandra retired from farming in 2000 and moved to Kyle a few years later. Retirement from farming and moving to town started a new chapter with extra time to spend traveling with friends and family to explore new destinations. Retirement also allowed more time to spend with their children and grandchildren creating many cherished memories. Community was important to Mel and Sandra; this was reflected in their support and commitment over the years participating in everything from sitting on numerous boards to washing dishes at the skating rink. Friends and family were an integral part of their lives and much time was spent entertaining at the farm and the cabin in the summer. Mel and Sandra enjoyed card parties, dinners, politics, traveling, fishing, gardening, friends, family and their seven grandchildren.
Mel and Sandra are survived by their children and grandchildren: Shelley (John Etzerza) Hollstein, Bonnie (Leo) Guigon, Mark, Daniel (Katie Day), Jaye (Jeff Dereniwski), Kelly (Gayle) Hollstein, Callie and Torri.
Melvin’s sister Elinor Moreside, nephews Wayne (Judy), Bob and niece Marilyn (Ted) Bowditch; Sandra’s aunt Jane Thomson and her son Robert (Garry Robinson) Orr. Surrogate family Claudette Nicolas, son Jarvis (Monique Lacombe) Nicolas and their children Lily and Max Wayne, and daughter Lise (Jared) Visscher and their children Hudson and Emma.
Mel and Sandra were predeceased by their parents, brother-in- law Art Moreside, uncle Bill Thomson and surrogate family Wayne Nicolas.
Their funeral service was held Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Kyle Elks & Community Hall with Pastor Linda Hall officiating. Words of Remembrance were shared by Robert Orr. Pianist was Darlene Smith, congregational hymns were "In The Sweet By and By" and "Amazing Grace" and soloist Lise Visscher sang "On Eagle's Wings". Ushers were David Lewis, Jarvis Nicolas, Mark Guigon and Daniel Guigon. Register Attendants were Callie Hollstein and Torri Hollstein. Honourary bearers were Norma and Ansgar Tynning, Jim and Una Lewis, Gordon Waldron, Mary Anne Carter and "All who shared in their life".
