It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Duncan Lawrence, 77, of Cambridge, Ont./Glace Bay, on Monday, March 23, 2015, at Freeport Hospital in Kitchener, Ont.
Born in Glace Bay and a former resident of Highland Street, he was the son of the late Walter and Cecilia (Gilday) Lawrence.
Duncan was a mechanic by trade. He worked at the Texaco garage on Brookside Street, Glace Bay as a manager. Duncan was later employed by Devco at the machine shop, Glace Bay, where he finished his working career. Some of his hobbies included playing cards and painting cars in his garage. Duncan was a kind and caring man who will be remembered for his blue eyes and big smile.
Duncan is survived by his daughter, Ignace (Clint) Nash with whom he resided with for the past 10 years in Cambridge; son, Graham (Carol), Cambridge, Ontario; five brothers, Bill (Betty), Joe (late Elsie), Raymond (Anne), Teddy (Brenda), Darrell (Ann Marie); sisters, Jeanette and Paul Quellette, B.C., Marie Koziel (Late Billie), Sydney, Anne and David MacLean, Sydney, Barbara Morrison (late Sandy), Glace Bay, Joan and Stephen Churney, Glace Bay; aunt, Ruth Taylor and uncle, Jim Gilday, both in London, Ont. Duncan will be sadly missed by his four grandchildren, Brittany, Tiffany, Tyler, Travis; three step-grandchildren, Emily, Samantha, Sidney and three great-grandchildren, Faith, L.J. and Evan.
Besides his parents, Duncan was predeceased by his wife, Irene (MacDonald) Lawrence in 2005, twin brothers, Douglas and Michael, sister, Betty (Lawrence) MacKenzie, brothers-in-law, James MacKenzie, Sandy Morrison, Bill Koziel, sister-in-law, Elsie Lawrence and in-laws, Irene and Graham MacDonald.
Visitation will be held on Saturday evening from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Fr. Norman MacPhee is Monday at 10 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay followed by a reception in the church hall. Interment will be held at a later date in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.
