Dr. Francis 'Frank' Crowe

Date de naissance : 11 mars 1935

Lieu de décès : Dartmouth
Date de décès : 14 avril 2015

Born in London, England to Irish immigrant parents, Tommy and Betty Crowe, Frank and his sister, Jean, were raised in the London area of 'County' Kilburn.
Frank was encouraged by his parents who believed that education was the key to freedom and happiness. If his parents believed in the value of education, young Frank delivered in spades. He attended the Royal London Hospital Medical School. On graduating, Dr. Crowe was presented his degree by HRH, the Queen Mother. Furthering his education, he earned diplomas in both anesthesiology and obstetrics.
While still in school, Frank met the beautiful and quite posh, Miss Elsie Dettmer, at the Orange Tree Pub in north London. Weeks later, they met again, miles away, a world away, in south London. During that serendipitous and highly unlikely second meeting, Elsie quipped, "I guess we’ll just have to get married." Her words proved prophetic.
Frank and Elsie were married in May of 1958 and following the birth of their first daughter, Lucy, in January of 1963, they boldly immigrated to Canada.
Settling in Windsor, Ont., and practising in both Windsor and Detroit, Frank returned to school and earned a fellowship in Radiology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Windsor, in its bustling days of automobile production, became their first real home in Canada and saw Frank and Elsie develop deep friendships that would last a lifetime. Windsor also saw the birth of two more daughters, Stephanie in 1968 and Emily in 1974.
Frank and Elsie, now three daughters strong, made another bold move to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and raised their young family in Sydney where Frank continued his parent’s legacy of instilling in his children, the joy and necessity of learning.
For nearly 30 years, Frank worked long, hard hours as a radiologist, lending his expertise to several area hospitals including Sydney City, St. Rita’s, Glace Bay and the Cape Breton Regional. He is remembered by his patients and colleagues for his dedication, kindness, warmth and humanity. However, his greatest joys in life were his family. He loved family dinners, camping, nature, gourmet cooking, wine, Shakespeare, travel, learning other languages, classical music and art.
Frank and Elsie retired in September of 2000 and moved to Dartmouth, N.S. to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren. He spent his retirement with his loving family, travelled extensively, and could often be found in their sun-filled home on the lake, standing in front of his stereo, “air” conducting the symphony who dared not follow his command. Frank adored his grandchildren and kept his silly side alive and well, turning at unexpected moments into the dreaded rubber-boot-eating-toy-stealing-tickle monster.
He was predeceased by the love of his life, Elsie in 2012. After a brief and unexpected illness, Francis Patrick Crowe died peacefully in the presence of his three daughters, surrounded by their love and listening to Mozart.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Dartmouth General Hospital for their skill, warmth and kindness.
He is survived by his daughters Dr. Lucy Lamond (husband Cameron), Mrs. Stephanie Baker (husband Christopher) and Dr. Emily Crowe (husband Joseph O’Neill); by grandchildren Fiona, Charlotte and Max Baker, Grace and Maria Lamond and Eva O’Neill; his sister Jean Dinneen (husband Dave); and niece Sarah Jane. He leaves behind his Grand-Dogs, Fergus, Kittie and Kevin.
He was loved by all.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, April 18 at 11 a.m. at Saint John XXIII Church, 35 Colby Dr., Dartmouth. Interment immediately afterward at Dartmouth Memorial Gardens, 767 Main St., Dartmouth.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in Frank’s memory to a charity close to your heart would be greatly appreciated.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, Dartmouth Chapel, 771 Main St, Dartmouth.
