Glenys Adam

Glenys Blanche Adam (Hurst) passed away peacefully at Ocean View Manor on Wednesday September 23rd, 2015 at the age of 84. Born in Halifax, she was the beloved daughter of the late Henry and Blanche Hurst.
Mom was a 35 year employee of BMO and held many positions during her tenure, including assistant manager. Mom spent two years as secretary of CNAG of which she and dad were active members. She was also an invaluable partner with her husband, Jim, in their business, Adam Arms. Mom’s church was an important part of her life and she was involved in fundraisers and various committees on behalf of the Little Church with the Big Heart. Mom loved to travel and shared many trips with friends and family to Barbados, Florida, Europe and beyond. She was full of fun and loved to host gatherings in her home. We will never forget her famous Bajan dinners and of course her annual Christmas Card Party which was always a hit! Mom was a champion for the underdog and always stood up for the little guy. She wrote countless letters and made many calls on behalf of others who were in need of an advocate. She was an ardent supporter of many charities, among them Margaret’s House, War Amps and the Canadian Diabetes Association. Her many friends will remember her easy laugh at their Christmas Club gatherings or her glee in winning a few dollars at the casino. She even won a shiny red convertible once which she steadfastly refused to give to her children. She was passionate about family and loved us all dearly but there was zero chance we were getting that car. Mom was a kind and gentle woman who was loved and respected by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. She performed many charitable acts during her lifetime and took pleasure in giving to others. It was a routine occurrence to have international students at her table for a holiday dinner, to have overnight company from Spain or Scotland, or to hear one of her many “unofficially adopted” daughters call her mom. This spirited and feisty lady will be missed by many.
Glenys is survived by daughter, Patti, Dartmouth; son, Michael (Ann McCarten) of New Glasgow; sister-in-law, Sadie Hurst, Dartmouth and many nephews and nieces in Nova Scotia, Ontario and Newfoundland. Glenys was predeceased by husband, James Adam; brother Gordon Hurst; sisters Peggy Hayward (Ken), Ruth Griffin (Gord).
Visitation will be held in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 on Monday September 28th. Funeral service will task place at 11:00 Tuesday September 29th at Memorial Gardens, Father Dave Puxley officiating. Burial in St. John’s Anglican Church, Westphal.
