With great sorrow we, the family, announce the passing of James Patrick Jessome, 80, on Monday, April 25, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family,
Born in Millville on Jan. 22, 1936, Jimmy was the son of the late Everett and Elizabeth (Marsh) Jessome.
He was a coal miner and worked in several Cape Breton mines for 35 years, until his early retirement due to health issues. Jimmy was an avid fisherman and hunter, and had several trips with his best friends.
Jimmy loved his family dearly. He always had time for each and every one, and could be counted on (with Theresa) as our babysitter. He loved to play a joke on anyone, laughing with us all.
His love of music was evident to all, as one could often hear him playing his guitar, or listening to traditional Cape Breton and Newfie music, either on tape or his much loved Channel 11. Although he was unable to cook the last four years, he could always find one or another cooking show to watch.
Jimmy is survived by his wife of 57 years, Theresa (MacAulay) Jessome; children, Lorna (Wayne) Willison, Orrillia, Ontario, Bernadette (Eddie) LeBlanc, Alex (Sirena), Millville, Mary Jessome and Tammy Jessome, both of Sydney Mines.
Jimmy was Papa to grandchildren Steven and Michael Willison, Natalie McGean and E.J. LeBlanc, Darren Clark, Jerry and Shaun Jessome, Christopher and Chad Jessome, and Brian Bradley.
Jimmy was Popo to great-grandchildren Andrew, Austin, Allexx, Maddi, Garrett, Emily, Caitlyn, Hudson, Raiden, Alexis, Breton and Brooklyn, and uncle to several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are brothers and sisters Cameron (Brenda), Joe (Judy), Betty, Marie (Carl), and Vivian, sisters-in-law Elaine, Mary, Mae and Patsy.
Besides his parents, Jimmy was predeceased by his in-laws Malcolm and Sarah (Sadie) MacAulay, his daughter Natalie, sisters Jeanette and Lorraine, brothers Alex and Austin, brothers-in-law Tom Bonnar, Bud Bonnar, and Michael Jessome, best friends Phillip Warren, Charlie Edwards and Mary Ann Boutilier.
Special thanks to the wonderful staff of the County and Northside Homemakers, and to the VON. All of you helped fill the last four years of Jimmy’s life with joy and laughter – truly special people.
To the staff of the Northside General Hospital, and Cape Breton Regional ICU and CCU, we thank you for your kindness and compassion, each and every day Jimmy was your patient. A special thanks to Dr. M. Knott and Marlene MacIntosh for always being there when needed.
Family flowers only. Donations in Jimmy’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Lung Association of Canada, or the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.
Visitation for Jimmy Jessome will be held on Friday, April 29, 2016, from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. A celebration of his life will take place Saturday, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating. Luncheon to follow in the Millville Community Centre.
Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.
