It is with great sadness we, the family of Aileen J. MacKillop, regret to announce her passing on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. Born on December 8, 1937 at Baddeck Forks, she was the daughter of the late Duncan and Helen (Gillis) Buchanan.
She loved boating on the Bras D'Or lakes, playing cards and travelling with her family and friends. In her younger years, after graduating from Leon Academy of Hair Design, she established her own business in Baddeck for several years. She worked at Alderwood Rest Home as a nurse’s aide before working at the Royal Bank in Baddeck, from which she retired in 1998. As an avid community worker, she volunteered for many organizations including, Knox Ladies Guild, Baddeck Volunteer Fire Department and Bras 0' Or Yacht Club. She was a longstanding member of Eastern Star and Knox Presbyterian Church, and was also a founding member of the Baddeck Curling Club. Aileen will always be remembered as a kind, warm lady with a soft voice and friendly smile who loved spending time with family and friends. She is survived by her loving husband, Jack MacKillop; son, Darren MacAulay (Lauri); stepdaughters, Maureen Court, Bonnie Maurer (Martin); step grandchildren, Mitchell and Grace Court and Noah Maurer; brothers, Bob Buchanan (Sharon), Don Buchanan (Ellen); seven nieces and nephews; twelve grandnieces and nephews and numerous cousins. She was predeceased by infant brother, Charles and daughter, Brenda MacAulay. The family would to thank the outstanding medical professionals involved in Aileen's care during her illness, including continuing care nurses and Victoria County Memorial Hospital doctors and staff. Special thanks to Dr. Genge, Dr. Chow and Dr. Ritter.
In honouring Aileen's wishes, cremation has taken place under the direction of MacAskill's Funeral Home, Baddeck. Family flowers only.
Visitation will take place at Knox Presbyterian Church, Baddeck on Sunday, January 29, 2017 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by an Eastern Star service. Funeral service Monday, January 30, 2017 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Brian MacLeod officiating. Following the service, a celebration of Aileen s life will be held at the Bras d'Or Yacht Club. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Society of Victoria County, Baddeck Volunteer Fire Department or a charity of one’s choice.
