Westville - It is with great sadness that the family of James Young "Biffo" Hamilton, Office Street, Westville, announce his passing, January 25, 2007, suddenly at the age of 85, at his home with his daughter Jane at his side. Born in Westville, March 2, 1921, he was the son of the late James and Jane (Gray) Hamilton. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He resided in Westville all his life and worked as a coal miner, working from 1938-1972 at the Drummond and McBean mines. After the closure of the McBean mine, he worked with the Dept. of Mines as a caretaker and night watchman, until he retired in 1982. He was an avid baseball fan and played for a Westville team in his earlier years. He also enjoyed hockey, playing darts, horseshoes and cards, as well as telling jokes to all who would listen. In later years most of his time was spent visiting his neighbours or at his home reminiscing with his children or grandchildren, many who visited him every day. To the end he maintained a keen sense of humour and quick wit and was able to recall many events of the past. Surviving are his daughters: Carol Gammell, Diane (Ed) Hartling, and Jane Young, all of Westville; sons: Robert "Bob" (Rhonda), Stellarton; Larry (Linda), Durham, and James (Kathy), Westville; 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; also six nieces and one nephew; and a sister-in-law, Nettie (Hamilton) Goss. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy (Cormier) in May 2004, and a son, Roy, in Oct. 2003; three sisters: Elizabeth, Jean and Marguerite; and his only brother, William who was killed in the mines, as was his father. He was also predeceased by a great-grandson, Jonathan Hartling; son-in-law, Andy Gammell; and two nephews, William and Jackie Hamilton. Visitations will be held at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Eagles Funeral Chapel, Westville, with Fred Jeffery officiating. Burial will be in the Auburn Cemetery, Westville. Family flowers only. Donations in Dad's memory may be made to the Auburn Cemetery, Salvation Army, or to a charity of your choice.
