EDITH PEARL BARTON

BARTON, EDITH PEARL The death of Edith Pearl Barton, wife of the late Donald C. Barton, occurred on Wednesday, September 24, 2003 at her home on McLeod Hill. Born November 21, 1919 on a farm on the Royal Road near Fredericton, she was the youngest of six children of the late J. Alfred and Catherine (Stickles) Anderson. The Kingsley United Baptist Church, of which she was a member, was a special part of her life. As well as being involved in church activities, she was genuinely interested in the lives of her church family. Edith always had a stick of gum or a piece of candy for the children and shared in their joy and problems. The church choir made her an honourary member and her home was always open for their gatherings. Edith took great pleasure in entertaining her many friends in her home, had a natural love of cooking and was known for her delicious oatmeal-molasses brown bread. Her kitchen table was also used for many games of Anagrams with any and all comers. She shared her excellent home style cooking with the residents of York Manor in the 1970's when she was in charge of the kitchen. Her surviving family includes a daughter Jean Dunphy (Lorne) of Victoria, BC, a son Raymond Barton (Thérèse) of Ottawa, ON, six grandchildren - Donald (Shannon), Kathryn, Erin, Matthew, Adam and Simon, two great grandchildren, Olivia and Gabrielle, as well as several beloved nephews and nieces. "Gram" Barton also had a number of `special grandchildren'. She took great joy in her family and was a loving, devoted mother. Besides her husband (1984) and parents, she was predeceased by her siblings - Hattie, Leila, Abbie, Bert and Osborne; as well as one grandson Allison Barton (1991). Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive at Douglas Avenue, Fredericton North, on Saturday from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will be held at the Kingsley United Baptist Church on Sunday, September 28, 2003 at 2:30 pm with Pastor Wes Stanley officiating, assisted by Mr. Wilbur Matthews. Interment will follow in the Seymour Memorial Cemetery. A reception will be held at the Community Church Hall following the service. Pallbearers for the service are: Aubrey Gaines, Murray Williams, Floyd Michaud, Scott Williams, Calvin Bradley and Gordon Gilmore. Honourary pallbearers are Earle Anderson, Alvin Ashfield, Dale Ashfield, Doug Hawkes, Arthur Brewer and Ralph Carruthers. Donations in memory of Edith may be made to the Seymour Memorial Cemetery, the Kingsley United Baptist Church or to a charity of the donor's choice.
